For those who would like to have a "plug and play" genny backup
system, Square D has come out with a nice manual genny transfer
panel.
Cost at Loew's is $128 (around here) Their item number is 28295.
Sqaure D's UPC number is 785901868200. Comes in two sizes, 30 amp
and
70 amp.
For about 1/3 the cost, there are generator switch over devices
that
do the same job without the extra panel. When I installed mine 4
years ago the cost was under $150 total for everything to hook to
my
generator.
Here is the company that makes the interface kits for most home
service panels:

$150, so where is the 2/3 saving using Interlock? The Square D panel
is complete. Only thing you need to get extra is the feed wire from
the panel out to your Genny and that's an extra with Interlock too
according to their website. Don't see the saving with Interlock.
JD up north
My $150 cost included the Interlock, the conduit run to the outside
for the generator feed, the wire for the feed, the plug outside to
plug the generator into and the cable I made to go from the generator
to the plug on the outside of the house. Most people, IF they do it
safely, will need most of these extra parts also.
