If you don't recall MTBE is a water soluble known carcinogen. Some
bright folks decided to use it to spike gasoline as an oxygenator.

I know all about MTBE. We had a couple dem govs that forces Az to GO
GREEN and adopt all sorts of stupid ideas. At one time there were 6
or 7 gas formulations in use here. That is why we had (other than CA)
the highest gas prices in the US.

The existence of MTBE was a major factor in the EPA's (failed) adoption
of oxygenated fuel. The EPA was wearing blinders and when wearing those
blinders they didn't see what the side effects of MTBE would be.

It has not failed (yet?) as they switched to ethanol to do it.
