I learned today that we don't have to have the problem with our
nuclear power plant spent fuel that we have now. Most of Europe
recycles the spent fuel into new fuel rods, but Jimmy Carter, in his
infinite wisdom banned the practice in the US. Damn.

There must be more to that story. Back in April, Italy wanted to ship
waste from shuttered nuke plants to Utah. Why doesn't somebody in
Europe want it?
two kinds of waste. Spent fuel rods are recoverable, contaminated
tools and clothing are not?
Close
The spent fuel rods can be reprocessed, the process involves work that
makes part of the material into "weapons" grade Uranium. The rest
becomes waste. While "modern" weapons don't use Uranium, weapons can be
made from it. Of course it can also be processed for use as fuel
And yes, Europe does NOT have storage for the high level radioactive
waste.
