Your point on the battery is well taken.
Perhaps the Kindle will endear enough users to support a new, better, generic reader with replaceable batteries which can do Amazon, Sony, etc.

Second, I don't think we understand what the Kindle represents. Now it appears as a way to generate profit for Amazon. As such, for Bob and I the Kindle is probably not the best format for reading commercial print. But it is quite clear now with the introduction of digital textbooks that the future doesn't involve trees. As I am becoming more comfortable reading my newspaper on-line, I'm wondering why I keep the costly paper subscription. I'm wondering if reading my local paper on the Kindle would be better for me and the trees. I'm finding myself buying the Kindle texts of books I want to re-read and keep, for later reading again. The best of the best. I am building a library I can take with me in the motorhome, the bike or in my backpack. Try loading your bookshelf on your back. It is changing what reading means to me.
The Kindle is either changing things or representing the way things change. It's not the Kindle, but the better environment it brings. Costly? Yes. Worth it? I have changed my "maybe" to a "yes".
Of course, your new library commits you to buying Kindle after
Kindle, as the batteries die. Paperback books are much easier to
read, with better contrast of black on white.
I think it's an idea whose time has not yet come. Except for
niche applications.
