Someone suggested that I call WD and speak to their tech support (he
also said they have a good warrantee program, and to consider that).
Well, first I tried the WD Data Lifeguard Tools, but no joy there
either. At that point, I decided to give WD a phone call. I
explained the problem to the tech (although I did not go into great
detail) and he responded by saying that the drive must be defective,
and he would get a replacement in the mail. So, for the moment,
problem solved. Next week when the new drive arrives, I will use WD
Data Lifeguard tools to copy the data to the new drive - that
appears to be what it is designed to do. BTW, if whomever suggested contacting WD reads this, thank you very
much - it was the first foolproof idea.

Thanks again, I may not always remember who helps me, but I do remember when thanks are needed.

i don't recall that you ever said whose laptop you had, but no matter whose, if you run the data lifeguard first, it will hopefully patch your os (if needed. some oem windows xp wont support drives over 180 gig, but the data lifeguard will patch that problem) to support that big of a drive, sounds like you are on a plan that will hopefully work....
