Interesting. Thanks.

Gives something to think about. One small tanker can melt a bridge
but a planeload of fuel can't melt a building? Where did the
goverment put the bombs in this one? Why do they hate Detroit so
much? ;-)

Iron loses half of its strength at only 800 degrees. Thermal expansion
contributes dimentional deformation and the load (concrete roadway) adds
shear force to the problem. Added to this, the shock of adding water to
the heat weakened iron causes the iron to recrystalize at the molecular
level.

When the referenced "building" failed, all of the falling material became
kinetic energy. Added weight as the floors failed sequentially became a
kinetic force way beyond design strength and many times larger than the
force of the initial impact.

The Detroit area has the highest Arab population in the country.

Concrete contains water; even after it has cured. The application of
heat, in sufficient quantity, will convert the water to steam and "spall"
the concrete. Without the concrete covering, metal reinforcing material
will be exposed to heat that will cause it to deform, (as mentioned in the
previous post,) and result in the failure of a concrete structure.

Just think "popcorn" - same principle.

Max (wondering what the Arab population has to do with it)
