AGM stands for Absorbed Glass Mat that has all the electrolyte in the

no loose liquid electrolyte, they can not spill.
I my work, I probably rebuild two or three banks with AGM each year.
They do not provide more capacity than the same size flooded cell, but
they can charge to full capacity faster. They are usually twice or more
the cost of the same capacity FCLA. They do excel in services with high
vibration. The total ampere-hour capacity of a rolled plate is usually
lower than a conventional construction battery, but they are fantastic
starting batteries because of the low internal resistance.
Owners like AGMs for their low maintenance and high reliability. Keel
boat racers like them because they can recharge the bank with less
engine run time. They have been the standard in aircraft for years.
I personally do not believe that they would be cost effective in an RV
application unless there is some special case.

Thanks for the detailed response Matt. I am
looking at setting up a battery bank for our
fifthwheel and was considering AGMs mainly due to
their low maintenance and fast charging time.
Sounds like you don't feel the extra cost is worth
it. I really don't relish the maintenance that
goes along with flooded cell batteries.
Taking AGM's out of the choices what do you
recommend for a bank?
Brian
If you have a good 3-stage chargeer, maintenance is minimal.
