Remember the old adage, nothing can be made foolproof, because fools
are so ingenious!
Most digital multimeters have automatic sensing.

There is not much you can do. Even if the knob is set to mV instead of
V, the multimeter will not be harmed. it just won't read correctly.
But on those that have knobs and switches and such like (especially
old analog ones)

the safest thing to do is set the controls to the highest AC voltage.
