Consider a clamp-on DC ammeter.
An RV which is used for dry camping is much like a spacecraft. When the space shuttle goes into orbit, it does so with all it needs to perform its mission. If the space shuttle needs 100 amp-hours and uses 110 amp-hours, things really suck. If it uses 90, then there's ten additional hours that might be put to good use. An RVer with a clamp-on DC ammeter can determine with specificity power in and out of the system. With such a device, I can easily determine what the power needs are for each item. I can decide which can be used and which need to be shut down. Based on the capacity of my batteries, I can tell if things are going to really suck.
Works great!
A Google search for "DC clamp-on ammeter" gives numerous examples and articles that explain how they work.
