Re: OT Antother Wi-Fi network Question

I have just spent several hours talking and online chatting with
Linksys - what a joke.

Here is what I was trying to find out.

In the 5er I want to set up a wired/wireless network. Wired to the
router will be NAS and desktop PC and attached wirelessly will be the
laptop.

I want to be able to attach to the kid's networks when I'm there
(their routers <50' away) to have access to the Internet and share the
files on my NAS.

On the road I have an Air Card and can shut down the network and Air
Card and connect to available Wi-Fi directly from the laptop.

Linksys 'live chat' tells me no way two networks can be connected
wirelessly.

Me: "I want to connect my wired/wireless network to another wireless
network wirelessly. Can I get a router that will bridge the two or do
I need 2 devices - router and access point, bridge, or?

Linksys: "Actually, you can only connect to your network if you are
within 100-150 feet from the router."

Me: "OK, I know that, but what product/products do I need to connect
my network wirelessly to my son's network which is less than 50'
away?"

Linksys: "You can connect two routers via wired connection. Is that
what you want?"

Me: "No. I want to connect my network - WIRELESSLY - to my son's
wireless network."

Linksys: "Oh, I see. No, I'm so sorry, we cannot use Linksys router to
bridge the connection of the other routers. Not even access point can
do that. Since the other routers are non-Linksys, you need to wire the
access point to them."

Me: "So it is not possible to bridge to another network wirelessly
using Linksys products?"

Linksys: "Yes, that is right."

Then I called their 800 number and after a long time of attempting to
explain what I wanted to do - they are friendly but don't comprehend
very well - I was told that any of their routers would connect to any
other router...wirelessly. So buy any one I wanted.

My D-Link DNS 323 NAS with 2TB is working here on my home base
network.
Now I want to setup a network in the 5er. I want to be able to
connect the 5er network to my son's network. What do I need besides a
router? or is it possible?

NAS-------Cat 5-------Router \____(????)---Wireless---Son's network
Laptop----Wireless----Router /
Desktop---Cat 5-------Router/

I still need to get a router and whatever else is necessary. Will any
wireless router work if I disable DHCP and do a little setup?

Thanks,
Jerry O.

i have a usb wireless on the laptop in the rv (in addition to the built in wireless) so i can bridge them (the wireless and the usb wireless to any hotspot/wyfler/cellular data router/etc) to the network in my vehicle without changing program things.... IMO much simpler and cheaper than other ways....

as a free alternative (but a programatic hassle), some of the alternate firmwares for that device support WDS (Wireless Distribution Services), or if you have a spare/2nd wap, you can run the alternate firmware on it, and just plug it in to your existing router....

bonus, doesn't require disabling DHCP (hint, i have my internal network on the .2 subnet, so whenever a .1 subnet is available my stuff sees the internet in addition to my other stuff on the .2, cept the wyfler on a .7 subnet or the kyocera on a .3, then i just change the gateway address)
