Acronis Plop-in Clone Success with Vista 64

After failing to get a viable clone from Copy/Wipe for Dos on my
Vista 64 bit system, I took Steve Wolf's advice and downloaded
Acronis in the latest version, Acronis Trueimage Home 2009.

Success. I am operating off the clone right now. I have opened,
used, and closed various programs. Everything seems to work just
like the original drive.

Vista was not fooled, exactly. After starting up, it identified
the new drive as different from the first (although they are the
same brand, capacity, and part #), installed it as new hardware,
and asked that I reboot for "settings to take effect".

The first reboot seemed to take a little longer than usual, but
no more instructions appeared. Vista seemed completely
comfortable with the new drive. So I rebooted again. This time
went much faster.

In fact this whole process was pretty painless. The clone
initiation is part of the tools menu in Acronis. The initial
setup of the task takes place in Vista, then it reboots to
.....well, something. Maybe DOS, maybe something else. All that
appears is white text on a black screen, with a visual cue to the
ongoing progress. When it finishes, another screen appears
asking you to press any key to finish and reboot. From start to
finish, about 2 hours for 320 Gig.

There is an automatic process, but I'm going to have to read up
on it. It seems to take some short cuts. I used the manual
process, and asked for an exact "as is" copy. It only took a few
clicks more.

That's it. Very comfortable and not enigmatic like some DOS
programs. You never feel you don't know what is going on.

I'm going to buy it. $50. It does what I want, and much more.
It may even replace, for me, Vista's backup and restore program.
It seems to work much the same way. We'll see.

So thanks, Steve. I've got my plop-in clone.
