less to produce them from recycled materials than from raw materials.
Look at aluminum as an example. It requires about 10 times the energy
to process raw aluminum ore than it takes to recycle aluminum.
So, if the net cost to society is lower for a given action, such
as recycling cars rather than producing new materials to build cars,
then I think government has a responsibility to act on behalf of the
people. It is win-win all around--less cost to society, it is
better for the environment, we import less oil from the Arabs, and
it lessens climate change.
