By picking Geithner today, he caused Wall Street to heave a big sigh of relief that he isn't nuts after all and it resulted in a big buying surge.

It is amazing to me that pundits can read the minds, collectively, of
tens of thousands of investors at once! Doesn't particularly surprise
me that you buy into it, whether it is blaming Obama when it goes
down, or giving him credit when it goes up.

The explanation, whenever the stock market goes dramatically up in the
last hour of trading (have you never noticed how often that happens,
or similarly it goes down?) may well be a lot simpler.
Could be, but all the pundits *I* heard were agreeing with my take while your view wasn't even mentioned. The rise started with the announcement, not 20 minutes before closing as happened on most days.

Weren't you paying attention?

I was, and there are two problems/untruths in your analysis. There was
no "announcement" and 3 pm Eastern, not 3:40, is the normal start of
the fund run on buying or selling.

Bull***. I'm tuned in at that hour every day. As soon as Geithner was selected the market started to move UP. Wall Street is the first to know and Fox News reported the selection. And the biggest surge in the market has consistently been in the final 20 minutes.
