The first time I responded, I should have included this link to a test
comparison between the two cars (with a Honda Insight thrown in for good
measure). They say the Golf has much better performance, although it is
an
automatic transmission which might have made some difference.

Thanks. I don't have time to read all that right now, but I may at some
point.

However, after my last VW (I've owned four) and VW dealer experience, it
would take an act of Congress to make me even consider another VW. (I
have a framed copy of a $2700+ dealer's refund check for "incorrect and
inefficient service to customer's vehicle.") And my Toyota experience
(this is our third) has been the complete opposite in every way.

BTW, the Prius uses a continuously-variable transmission and a planetary
gear drive, not a conventional "automatic" transmission (although of
course it operates automatically).

I should have reread before posting. What I meant to say was that the Prius
uses an automatic, while the Golf uses a standard transmission. And, you
are right that CVT is not exactly an automatic, but that is probably the
best way to describe it to the less mechanically inclined. (My Nissan has a
CVT, and I like it very much - especially since with my knee, I would have
trouble with a clutch after a while.) Interestingly enough, I don't think
the VW uses a strictly standard either - it is a standard with automatic
electric shifting, so neither falls into a neat category.

I have owned 3 VWs (a Beetle, a Squareback, and a Rabbit). I was happy with
all of them, and would have no problem with buying another - in fact, in
June when I bought the Nissan, I looked at Veedubs, but they are a lot more
expensive these days. I would love to check out the VW diesel, but I'm sure
the price would be prohibitive regardless of what ever other good can be
said for it. BTW, in an interesting change of fate, the new VW diesel
qualifies for a government rebate, and the Prius doesn't. <g>
