I hate to say it, but this is typical of what so often happens here.
Somebody asks for advice on how to do a specific thing, and the answers
-- well-intentioned, I'm sure -- run the gamut without answering the
question.

I've seen this countless times: Somebody might ask (for example) about
replacing an RV house battery, and before the thread finally dies, the
poster has been advised to completely rewire the house electrical system
on his rig. And all he wanted to do was to replace the battery.

No - No - No! The RVer must replace the current systerm with two golf cart batteries just in the off chance that his colf cart's battery dies he can then interchange with the RV for emergencies. There is absolutely no need to rewire said RV. But that water heatrer may need a new element! I assume this since the rig in question doesn't seem to have weather stripping on the roof.

The question here was what port number to use (or other simple
modification) so that my friend could send e-mail from his laptop on my
network in exactly the same way he does at his home. That's all.

Only the ISP can give you the correct answer with so little data. Why not just give them a call?

I can tell you in general terms he needs to authenticate with the ISPs outgoing mail server. It is likely a SMTP server. Sometime the port numbers are changed from the default so you7 may need that setting too. But you need to know how the sever expects authentication...ie...in clear text or coded...authenticate before or after logging into incoming mail server (probably a POP3)...SSL or non-secure? Everyone is guessing because we don't know what your ISP knows. So any suggestion for anything other than what yous pecifically asked for has exactly the same vcalue as all the guesses that have been posted so far. So why get your panties in a wad about it?

Call the ISP.

My friend is not interested in work-arounds, whether simple or
complicated. He simply wants to be able to use his usual e-mail in the
usual way. Other people do it here all the time without problems
(including two other guests who were here earlier in the weekend).

If it's not possible -- although it was the last time he was here -- all
you have to do is say so. If it IS possible, say how to do it.

Attitudes (mine or his) have nothing to do with it. A simple answer to a
simple question would suffice,

For anyone to give you a simple answer they have to know how your ISP wants your friend to log in to gain acess to their servers. If he does not authenticate properly then they assume he is a relayer...probably...but that's just a WAG.
