This is typically what is going on.. People ( both sides ) have no
facts to work with so they belittle a candidate's supporters with
innuendo and insults. Then they insult the candidate with stuff that
has nothing to do with political stands or character ( She wears ugly
clothes or she winked wrong ). Palin seems to be the recipient of
most of this stupidity but not the only one.

'nuff ranting .. going to get some donuts !!!
Dude, #1: It's an RV group on usenet. Anyone who thinks they're going to have an affect on the election here is only fooling themselves. I'm participating in the conversation because I think it's entertaining, and every now and then I learn something.

#2: I am one of the "folks". I grew up in a town about the same size as Wasilla. I've lived about half of my life in small towns or rural areas. As far as I'm concerned being one of the folks is nothing to be ashamed of. Sarah Palin's Hee Haw version of ordinary Americans is. It's an insult. She has earned the laughter.
Alaska has its own small town culture the same as small town Texas or Alabama. If you weren't brought up there, it's cultural shock.

Only some provincial clod hasn't learned that.

Among many other odd places on the globe I've been to AK. Maybe I wasn't there long enough, because I didn't run into a single individual who talks the way Sarah Palin does.

TB displays the same type of cultural elitism as most eastern liberals. They think anyone not educated in an Ivy League school is a rube. Of course, they ignore the contributions of those rubes, because it makes them feel superior. Look at the comments of the people here that belittle Palin, nothing but elitism and snobbery. Of course, that is why they can support Obama, ivy league education, nice diction, well dressed; what more could they ask for - he's as arrogant and snobby as they are.

Dude! By your definition I'm one of the rubes! I haven't worn a tie since my sister's first wedding. She's on husband #3. About the closest I can get to Ivy League is a nephew who went to West Point. What Sarah Palin is doing is reverse elitism AND she talks down to people while she's doing it.

Since everyone wants their verson of Garrison Keiller I guess it's time for my own story about going out for a piece of pie:

Newport was the big city in that area. My high school graduated 100 kids the year I graduated. I went to kindergarten with some of those kids. One of my main girlfriends back in those days, and off and on for awhile after, graduated in a class of 12. She lived on a farm. Or at least I think of it as a farm because her dad wore bib overalls. (My dad was a mechanic. He wore regular overalls.) They were mainly raising beef cattle since it was no longer economically viable to have regular diary pickups in that marginal farming area. It's in a small valley in the coast range in OR. In the bigger valleys or broader places in the little valleys there's still plenty of farming in that area. The last I knew they still had a few cows on what was left of the farm, mostly to help pay the property taxes.

Her dad sort of liked me--about as much as any teenage boy could hope for the father of the teenage girl you're dating. I think that was mostly because I had good manners and was willing to work around the farm just to be with his daughter. In the summer we put up hay. In the winter we feed that hay to the cows. Since he liked me in the winter he would sometimes invite me to go into Alsea and have a piece of pie. Alsea is still a tiny dot on the map.

Now maybe some folks don't talk about politics around the campfire, but those farmers (and/or ranchers, depending on which definition you're using) would talk about politics while having coffee and a piece of pie at the local cafe. And maybe those ol' boys didn't look like much, but they were men who were providing for their families in a tough business. They knew a thing or two about a lot of stuff--including politics. At times I would be the only youngster in the circle and they thought of me as a big city boy. I learned real quickly that if you were going to wade into that conversation you had better have a good idea what you're talking about and some facts to back you up, but not once did those guys feel that it was necessary to talk down to me. Over the years I've learned many of lifes more important lessons from guys who wore bib overalls.

TB

Good story TB.. A few years ago I went to the cattle auction yard with my BIL.. Was I surprised to end up in a fast paced.. plank-floored.. brokerage house.. bunch of ol' farmers..in bib overalls.. laying out 50-100k for different futures and options to hedge their crops/livestock.. You wouldn't think those guys had a clue outside of 'doing chores'... then you were humbled to be in their midst and watch the goings on....

Shoulda had a sign over the door...

"This ain't your Daddy's kind of farming"

Ps. They most all did like driving a big Oldsmobile!!! [on Sundays of course!] :)

New every two... remember??
