As I recall, the part I argued about was the concept of local cops

The cops were very visible, so were the pot users. I was there, you weren't.

So now they were "users" instead of "growers?"

The foot traffic showed the users were also the growers.

"Users" in Humboldt
County are often legal under state law, just not federal.

Not true in 1993.

Officials reported Wednesday that nearly 100,000 plants -- worth up to an estimated $30 million -- have been collected from a marijuana grow over the last three days.

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office, assisted by Campaign Against Marijuana Planting personnel, have eradicated 99,000 marijuana plants ranging from two feet to six feet tall. The value of those plants -- if they had reached maturity -- is estimated at $29.7 million, said the press release.

Yep, why you are countering your own argument I don't know, but that
fully agrees with what I said.

You said there was NO local law enforcement in the Garberville area but the Humboldt county Sheriff's dept has a station there. Just admit you didn't know what you were talking about.

I said then and I say now there are no cops
under local control (meaning the control of anybody in Southern
Humboldt County, and the County/Fed/State spend enormous amounts of
time and our tax dollars working to wipe out the growers.
Anyone with a 'phone can call in knowledge of a pot-growing operation.

GARBERVILLE has a County Sheriff's Sub-station.

Operations

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office Operations Bureau is made up of seven units under the command of a Sheriff's Captain. Patrol has one Main Station in Eureka, outstations in Garberville, Hoopa, and McKinleyville, and five resident deputy posts.

Once again you're full of what Don Lampson calls "big windys".

Once again you post something that agrees with what I said, and make
it sound like you've found the opposite. Control is out of Eureka,
where the Captain and Sheriff ares. No control exerted from anybody in
Southern Humboldt.

Sheriff sub-stations are responsible for law enforcement in their particular areas; otherwise there would be no reason for sub-stations.
They don't have to call home before taking action.

Impossible
to know if they get 10%, 50%, or 90%, but they do help keep the price
up.
Pulling up plants is what keeps the price up.

Once again, you just said what I said.

I got the impression you were talking about percentage of profits going to law enforcement for keeping their eyes shut. That was the original comment I made based on what my friend said about the law closing their eyes to local pot growing. Which I personally observed to be obvious.

Since you know everything, did you know the number of houses in your hometown of Arcata that were pot-growing factories? Do you have a home rented out?
*************
Law enforcement officials estimate that as many as 1,000 of the 7,500 homes in the Humboldt County community of Arcata are being used to cultivate marijuana, slashing into the housing stock, spreading building-safety problems and sowing neighborhood discord.
******************

Lest you forget, I've by no means been arguing against the idea that
Humboldt County is, and has been, a major marijuana center. Just your
contention that because someone masquerading as the "mayor of
Garberville" told you stuff about local (to Southern Humboldt, not
Arcata, which is North, and does have a mayor and police force) law
enforcement it must be true. It wasn't, and isn't.

It was obviously true that law enforcement ignored pot growing activity in the vicinity of Garberville during our short stay there.

I would be very amazed if the number of homes in Arcata where pot is
being grown is only 1000. Arcata was the first town in California to
issue marijuana ID cards after the law was passed legalizing medical
marijuana, and there are commercial distribution centers operating
under that guise, supplied by local small-time growers. Highly
unlikely that a significant percentage of that 1000+ are "pot-growing
factories" - I doubt the local power grid could handle that!

Take it up with the newspaper since it was a cut & paste.

As far as housing stock goes, there has never been any significant
available stock in Arcata in the past 30 years, so implying that it is
because of pot growing is a red herring. Vacancy rates typically under
3%. Arcata is an anti-growth community in terms of public policy, and
the home of a university. The combination means that there is
tremendous pressure on local housing stock. Home prices run 50% higher
than Eureka, 8 miles to the south.

Take it up with your local newspaper. They wrote the article.

Don't they know their own city?
