Seems that MIT found a very simple solution that makes solar power
viable. I don't understand any of it. Maybe Neon John can tell us
if it works as easily as they make it sound in this article.

I don't understand the physics and stuff, but the idea sounds great.
Just today I had to stop at the electricity co-op to pick up a form.
Everyone was complaining about their bills. The co-op can't raise
the rates per KWH, but they can add a fuel-cost surcharge. I asked
them why they weren't using wind and solar power, especially since
both are bountiful here.
Also, this story from July 18th should be of interest.

Just out of curiosity....
Building wind facilities in the corridor that stretches from the Texas
panhandle to North Dakota could produce 20% of the electricity for the
United States at a cost of $1 trillion. It would take another $200
billion to build the capacity to transmit that energy to cities and
towns.
That's a lot of money, but it's a one-time cost. And compared to the
$700 billion we spend on foreign oil every year, it's a bargain.
ummm, 2 q's, notice it's 1trillion$ for 20% of the 700 Billion.....
Thats a savings of only about $140 billion a year, not the whole
enchilada as most people ASSUME...
What about the other 80%? we'd still be sending $560 Billion a year
will still go outside the US..
What about the NIMBY factor? (Not in My Back Yard).. seems the
senator from Mass didn't want a wind farm on the bay in MA, cause it
would mess up his view when he went sailing.. Hopefully the senators
from the area on the map are less powerful, and can't stop it...
Howabout the fact that this is comparing apples to oranges! The 700 billion
we spend on foreign oil is used for transportation fuel that jets, trains,
autos and trucks need to go from point A to B. Most electricity is produced
by coal, natural gas, nuclear power, but as far as I know, not by refined
products from crude oil.
No matter how you cut it, there is no economical substitution for crude
oil's 97% usage in our transportation. Nada.
The question that the two presidential candidates must be asked is: How is
alternative fuels(solar, wind, NG, biodiesel, hydrogen etc.) going to get us
from point A to point B?
