OT - Help! Bought something on ebay

I made my very first purchase on ebay today. There wasn't much time on the auction and I wanted the item. It was at an excellent price. I set up a paypal account with a credit card but didn't know until too late that it takes them a couple of days to verify the credit card.

I sent the seller (seems like it's a business) an email asking if I could pay directly with a credit card (I have one that I only use for online purchases) and haven't heard from them yet.

What is the protocol when one's bid is accepted. Can the seller wait until paypal gives me the secret code on my credit card statement?

Will I lose the item? I was the sole bidder paying $5 over the asking price.

I'm really green at this stuff and I can use some advice.

TIA,

ebay newbie
