It's called "sniping". EBay does not prohibit the practice of sniping.

"Placing a high bid in the closing seconds of an auction-style listing is
called "sniping" within the eBay Community. Sniping is part of the eBay
experience, and all bids placed before a listing ends are valid - even if
they're placed one second before the listing ends."

Yup. I jumped on the sniping bandwagon practically from the beginning of my
sleazebay experience. Before the automated sniping services came about, I'd
sit there with one computer doing refreshes as fast as possible and another
computer with several windows open, each loaded with a different snipe amount.
My snipe bid was ultimately the most I was willing to pay but usually I got
the item for much less. Nerve wracking sometimes, given the number of network
upsets back then.

Sniping services were a Godsend. Early ones were free but they grew so fast
that they had to start charging to afford the bandwidth.

I used http://www.phantombidder.com/. I liked their service and system. A
buck a snipe but only if it wins. The system lets you specify how soon before
the auction ends to submit the bid. I used the system minimum of 3 seconds.

I'm a cheapskate so I would not bid much for anything. Yet my snipe success
rate was about 70%, based on phantombidder's statistics panel.

Of course, my fault was not bidding the maximum I was willing to pay.

That's what eBay recommends that you do.

Of course they do so that people will get auction fever, run up prices and
make more fees for Ebay. I like sniping better :-) Or did. No more
sleazebay in my future.
