Sounds like you found the original download. I follow this practice: I
have a folder called "Distribution Files" (which is regularly backed
up to an external drive). Each downloaded setup/program goes into a
subfolder named for the publisher, and if needed a text file is added
with serial numbers, activation codes, or whatever.
That's another great idea...
I had downloaded 4 picture programs, Irfan, xnview, fastStone and a
free firehand...
Faststone was the best of the lot, but there's nothing like a program
that you're familiar with and does everything you want.
I've wiped them all out, except FastStone...

I feel the need to add $0.02 worth to this thread. I use a program
that creates restore points of the registry and system files when a
new program is installed plus it allows me to see what was changed and
which files were replaced and added (ConfigSafe).
As to the archive of the downloads each machine I have uses a folder
named Files.Arch that has sub-folders Xp.Installed, Xp.Removed and
4review. Xp.installed has subfolders for MSPatches, antivirus,
utilities, internet.tools. This File.arch folder set gets mirrored to
the file server on the home network on a daily basis by the use of a
script. Any installation keys or special information and comments are
saved in a txt file with the same base name as the program.
I have also slipstreamed the XP instalation for each machine and the
ISO file is also stored on the file server so if I loose a hard drive
I can restore the system in a short time. I also store weekly
differential backups and monthly full backups on the file server.
I have thought about using Acronis® True Image 11 Home but I would
need four licenses to meet my needs. The scripts and folder structure
have worked for me twice so far so I guess I'll save the license bucks
for some newer hardware.
