Rejuvinating Refer Shelves

Lazy Lady, being of, ahem, mature years, has a small problem with her
fridge shelves. They seem to be aluminum and are rough and possibly
the roughness is corrosion. It won't come off and I know the shelves
are clean but they look funky.

Can they be polished? Replaced? (with the more modern coated wire
shelves)

I also have a problem with even removing them, They slide out about
1/3 of the way but there are square things on the sides of the fridge
that they slide through which stop them from sliding all the way out.
I don't want to break anything by forcing it.

Any help on offer is appreciated.
