Florida will soon boast the largest solar power system in the United
States, thanks to San Jose's SunPower, which said it will build the
facility for Florida Power & Light.
The deal includes a 25-megawatt plant in DeSoto County, Fla., and a
10-megawatt plant at Kennedy Space Center.
SunPower already has some experience in this sort of thing. Just last
year, it built the largest existing solar power plant in the nation, a
14-megawatt facility at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas.
The deal "confirms the growing trend in the U.S. to build solar power
plants at a scale rivaling those in the market-leading countries such
as Germany and Spain," Howard Wenger, SunPower's senior vice president
for global business, said in a statement.
Julie Blunden, a SunPower vice president, said the size and number of
such deals is expected to accelerate as more states demand renewable
power.
In comparison, Calpine's Metcalf Energy Center, a natural-gas power
plant in San Jose, generates about 600 megawatts, or about 17 times
more electricity than the Florida solar sites will produce.
But it beats the hell out of nothing.
