The mechanism is called education, but most of those "innocent" weren't paying attention.

I once funded a program at a college that taught Freshmen about what happened if they used all the shiny new credit cards that came in the mail without having the means to pay them off. Since that time (early 90's) many high schools and colleges offer such programs. Your innocents didn't bother to go to class.

It is not up to those of us who did pay attention to bail out those who did not. The money for the creation, staffing and other operational expenses for your hypothetical regulatory mechanism would be paid for by the people who did pay attention. I will take money out of my own pocket to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and care for the ill, but I will not be happy to do that to bail out the stupid. JMTCW

My Dear Lady.
You must have led a sheltered life. I have known people that you couldn't teach the intricacies of a credit card agreement to if it were possible to do it surgically. These are people to be pitied, not chastised. No amount of education will help them to understand simple interest on a loan much less compound interest.

All you have to teach them is that if you don't have the money to pay the bill; don't buy it. Maybe they get their bad fiscal habits from the federal government <g>

I wish I could converse with you on the phone and have you explain stock market options, puts and calls, ETFs, CDOs, and derivatives.
I'm sure you could do it here; anyone can use Google.

I probably could not explain all of that. Not without doing a refresher course.

Well there are folks to whom real estate transactions, insurance contracts and credit card agreements are just as esoteric as stock market terminology is to the average high school kid.
I meet people daily who don't know exactly what their homeowner's insurance policy covers.

If they would have paid attention in school, maybe their reading abilities would be a little better. In any event, they could have asked the real estate agent to explain things in terms they could understand. They could have asked the insurance agent to explain things in terms they could understand. Is it my fault that these people have been set loose in a culture which requires some reading comprehension to exist? Is it my fault that they are too ashamed to ask for assistance?

One of my daughters is a Realtor and you should hear some of the stories she tells me about how difficult it is at times to explain a contract.
These are average folks. Now think of someone with an IQ of about 90 or so who can barely hold down a minimum wage job.

And this "stupidity factor" is the responsibility of everyone else because.....?????

There are sharks out there who live off those people.
My object is not to expect everyone else to pay for them; it's to require plain, clear, simple explanations of what they might be getting into.

Just about every state has some kind of "plain language" legislation these days. No one forces them to have a credit card. If they can't understand the language, then they should refuse the cards.

The people who get into trouble want what they want NOW and have no concept of saving up for it. That's a problem that began with their parents.

I raised my children to accept responsibility for their own actions. I accept responsibility for mine, as well. Why should the rest of us pay for people who can't??

Max (thank you for your patience)

....and thank you, sir, for yours.
