......At least a happy ending from my POV.
Last June 17, 2007, while on the road in Bend, Oregon, I
bought a Garmin C340 GPS. Great unit and worked well
until last Thursday when it took a dump while southbound
on I-5 in route to Palm Springs from the Bay Area. The unit
froze up. Strange. Frozen map on screen and said I was
going 25 MPH. It would not respond and would not turn off.
Here in PS, we unplugged it and let the battery run down.
Then it would not power up. Maybe a fuse? Don't know or
care.
I bought it from Best Buy in Bend, OR. And I paid an extra
$49.99 for a prorated service contract. Last night I took it
back to Best Buy in Palm Desert. I had no receipt with me.
No problem. They pulled it up on their system and printed
me a Duplicate Receipt at the Customer Service Center.
Then they sent me to the "GEEK SQUAD" counter where
a young not so geek looking dude was counting fly specks
on the ceiling until they closed at 10 PM. He glanced at it,
did no real inspection, asked his computer about that model
and it was proclaimed to be DOA and subject to replacement
with what ever unit I chose and adjustable as to price difference.
I went to the department and chose a new NUVI 260W with 4.3"
screen. The old C340 was 3.5".
They gave me a refund of the full amount I paid for the C340
plus a prorated $39.52 still left on the service contract.
If I took the new NUVI 260W with no new contract except the factory
one year they were going to pay me $17.97. Or....I could buy another
4 year contract and pay them $32.02 out the door.
I opted for the 4 years again.
I could have picked any unit. Up or down and also other brands.
We plan to spend more time on the road and this just worked VERY
WELL and makes sense for the future.
At least for a GPS Unit, the combination of Garmin and Best Buy
works for me. $32.02 and I have an up to date GPS and service contract
exchanged while on the road with little hassle.
