OT ~ Newspapers in Trouble (OT about business, not politics)

McClatchy Company, the 3rd largest newspaper outfit in the nation,
is very possibly in deep trouble. When they bought Knight-Ridder
I thought they were going a bridge too far.

They own 31 newspapers in 15 States.

When McClatchy bought Knight-Ridder they also bought our local
newspapers The Contra Costa Times and The San Jose Mercury News.
Those were immediately sold off to MediaNews and formed into a group
called Bay Area Newsgroup - East Bay along with the Oakland Tribune.
Now those papers are having trouble also.

The Journal Register Company owns 27 newspapers in metropolitan
areas of the North East. They are also in deep doodoo.

Years ago, Matt Drudge predicted this sort of thing. News
organizations
on the Net such as The Drudge Report are taking over little by little.
And
now with the advent of the Bay Area organization, Craig's List,
advertisers
are using print ads in newspapers less and less.

Many newspapers are scrambling to have a presence on the Net. They
are
now dropping requirements for registering and logging in. But in most
cases
it's too little and too late. In this economy some will fall and be
gone.

Sad, that.
