Yep. Mine has a thermostatically controlled coolant heater and a
full-time battery charger/maintainer. It doesn't get cold enough here in
central NC to be considered "severe," so that's all that's needed.

Exercising weekly helps to make sure it will start and produce
power - the only way to make sure of the transfer switch is to yank the big
switch and -simulate- an outage and see what happens.

I do that once in a while. We have a 200-amp master transfer switch for
the carriagehouse (that's the switch that has the computer board in it)
and a 400-amp slave switch for the main house. Those switches make a lot
of noise when they engage -- first the master, then the slave. Both trip
within just a few seconds of the time the genset starts up.

The main idea behind
the weekly exercise is the hope that -if- it doesn't start, or starts and
doesn't produce power, you'll find out that there is a problem -before- you
really need it.

I completely concur with that idea.

I do love to hear that big ol' sucker cranking up and purring. During a
power outage there is no sweeter sound on earth <g>....
