*BUY* an update for new GPS?

Last night I saw restaurants and other businesses, which went out of
business four+ years ago, listed in the GPS's food and lodging
section. I registered my Garmin c539 today and saw a 2008 map update
for $69.99. What! I just rec'd the unit in January 2008, so why
should I
have to BUY an update? I asked that and rec'd the following reply:
<<..............................................
"The StreetPilot c530 is sold with version 8 City Navigator NT maps.
These version 8 maps require less storage space and will work well
for most customers. A map update is available (2008 City Navigator
NT). If you should choose to update, one of two regions must be
selected to load to the unit - both regions will not fit into the
memory of the StreetPilot c530. The regions you can load to your
device are the lower 48 states or Canada, Alaska, and the states
bordering Canada. It is possible to switch back and forth between
the two regions. The cost of the 2008 City Navigator NT update is
$69.99.
"Again, the mapping update is not required and certainly not
recommended for everyone. You will likely want to use the unit for
some time before determining if an update will be helpful. If you
experience errors in the mapping data such as new roads which are
missing, please contact us and we can look to see if our 2008 City
Navigator NT maps have the data you are seeking. "
...............................................>>
How accurate is version 8 vs. 2008 City Navigator NT? How the heck
would I know if version 8 is missing new streets? If the old data in
the restaurant section is any indication, then the map data is way
out of date, too.
Perhaps answers to my questions will help Lee when he gets his GPS
unit. Up-to-date info will be more crucial for him than I. The slick
little manual is lacking and not very helpful to get the best use out
of that cool gizmo.

Cute... in the GPS restaurant list was "Chips Computer." It is a
computer sales and service place. I wonder if there's any trans fat
in their chips?
