This is the optical head out of a Sony PlayStation III. It's a combo CD/DVD/BluRay
reader. It's a replacement part that Sony sells for about $90. It's a hot item
right now because it contains a fairly high power gorgeous violet laser that nerds
love to strip out and play with.

Personally, I'm just dumbstruck at the engineering that went into this piece and the
number of disciplines involved. Electronics, mechanics, optics, lasers, thin films,
etc. How the heck do they do that? Give the retail price of the module, the
manufactured price to Sony is probably in the $20-30 range.

violet laser is gorgeous. Gotta have one....
