After weeks of contemplating the choice presented to me, I bought a
TomTom GPS (for $450, now $149, of course) and haven't looked back. I
wouldn't do the laptop thing again.
I use my laptop (with SA) for trip planning, but it has never occurred
to me to hook my GPS to it while actually driving (for one thing,
there's no convenient place to put the laptop).
My GPS is a Garmin 2620. I have troubling conceptualizing the usefulness
of a laptop too -- at least while driving. The GPS has greater built-in
capacity for routing, tracking, POIs, and various trip calculations than
I will ever have need for.
