damn. They got bars in the afterlife?
You going back to FL tomorrow?
Not going back. But I stayed overnight down where I used to watch. Had some Dogs and a Hormel. Didn't have a fire, because I was hiding behind the trees.

What'd you find out about parking
across the draw bridge?
There's a gate over there where the main island starts. There's plenty of parking (and some shade) on both sides of the road up to the gate.

The gate is at the NW side of the little rectangle.
I'll keep that in mind. Next time I go, I may run over there and have
a look. BTW, from up there, the launch pad is way to the left of the
assymbly building. Much further than you think it is. Don't let the
angle of the road fool you. It's at a 45 degree angle from the road.
I had my compass and SA to give me a bearing for camera setup. I must've been pointed wrong, because I didn't see the launch. I figger it should be about 95-100 deg from where I was hopelessly waiting.
Maybe cause there wasn't one?
Oh damn. Was that my problem? I thought I'd gone deaf and blind.

From where I was on the other side of
the bridge, it's 87 degrees.
That'll work, but I show it closer to 95 to 39A over there. I think you may be measuring to 39B.
That's what I kept thinking, but I think they have the pads mislabeled
on all the maps. I know that what looks like the first gantry north
of the big building is not the one it takes off from. It's way the
hell on further north from the assymbly building.
On all the maps? Even Google maps shows the southernmost 39 pad as A.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=launch+pad+39A&sll=28.73184,-80.601883&sspn=0.0858,0.142136&ie=UTF8&om=0&ll=28.617679,-80.609779&spn=0.042947,0.071068&t=h&z=13

Further poking around the NASA site got me some detailed maps of A and B. Comparing those with a Google sat map confirms that the southernmost of the two 39's is A.

If you point your right little finger at the assy building, touch your
thumbs together at the tips and point your left little finger out, the
launch will be from where your left little finger is if you have your
fingers spread out. If that makes sense to you, then you're doing
better than I am tonight.
Since I'm not down there, that'll be a little hard to do.

I'm not sure what it is about the pad names. I did the same check
that you did. I jsut know that from where I was, the launch was way
off to the left of where it would appear to be using the Google sat
maps. It was far enough away, that the shuttle was visibly above the
ground before I could locate it and get the camera on it.

I guess you acutally have to see it to figure it out. I'm still
scrounging to see if I got those launch pictures on a CD, then I can
show you where the launch took off from.

Using the photo you sent me, and Google Earth, I drew lines from the west end of the bridge to A and B. The B line misses (to the North) that island in your picture, and the A line crosses the island. I think your photo shows an A pad launch - the southernmost 39 pad.

Since you should be able to position on GE exactly where you took the pic from, draw lines from there to each pad, and see where the lines cross the island. Where you start from on that little causeway makes a significant difference in where the lines cross the island.

Theory don't mean squat if it don't work.
