In many ways we are tougher on our vehicles. We run them cold way more than truckers do. Short hops are hard on our engines and trannies.

How long should we warm the engines? It may be in the manual, but I missed it.

I noticed, tonight, when I turned the ignition off, it shuttered. Is that common in a diesel?

Ha! Ha! yes that is common to the diesel, has something to do with the compression ratio. I get in, turn the key on and then patiently connect the seat belt, by then the startup lights might be off, the last one in cold weather will be the one with a little curlie cue on it, representing the fuel filter heater. But in cold weather the diesel will not worm up very fast. You will have to be patient and it will only warm up under load. All Cummins engines have an electric 110 Volt AC, house current heater installed in the engine. But unless you already have one, you will have to buy the electric cord that connects to it. Then it hangs out the front grill where you plug an extension cord in to make it warm up or keep the engine warm. Now you can buy these cords at any Cummins service department, but the one from the Dodge dealer has the one that connects to the frame in pre drilled holes in the frame. Cost a little more but works better. You do not need this unless you are gonna be up noth in the cold weather. Or are like me, will not load a cold engine, gonna get on the road early in a hurry and take the 5er with me, I plug her in and when I sit my bohunkie in that drivers seat the cummins is just waiting for me to wiggle my foot and stick my big toe down on the floor.
