The owner's manual calls for oil changes at 7,500 miles. Unless you
are driving in extreme conditions, the only reason to change it every
3,000 is to keep the oil companies happy. An oil change at my dealer
runs $50 with a coupon they send out every six months. Normal charge
is $75.
Echo that. This 3000 mile oil change interval is one of the more pernicious frauds
perpetrated on the public.
I consider 7,500 miles the minimum change interval.
I didn't pay attention to what truck you bought - the conversation got too silly for
me - but if it's fairly new, it probably has an oil change indicator. The PCM
(computer) records the operating time and the conditions and continuously computes
the oil quality. When it computes that an oil change is due, it lights a light. Some
vehicles even have oil quality sensors.
I use synthetic oil in my car because that's what GM recommended. I've learned
though oil testing that I can go double, at least, what the PCM computes. When the
light comes on, I reset it. When it comes on again, I change the oil. The mileage
interval seems to run 7-10,000 miles between each light illumination.
