When you folks say, "socket", do you mean "receptacle"? Cause a socket is
what a bulb screws into and a receptacle is what a plug plugs into and you
all are confusing me.
Sorry receptacle, as opposed to switch.
Okay, here's what's happened. I'm not touching it. I went to Lowes
and got the GB Live Wire.
Figured out how to get the batteries in, a major feat on its own, and
held it up to a receptacle <g>
It flashed and beeped and was quite sure there was plenty of power at
the receptacle,
So, I walked it over to the busted switch and nothing. So, there's no
power at the switch. That makes no sense, even if the switch was off
when it broke, wouldn't there be power going to it?
I wanted there to be power so when I threw the breaker there would be
no power. Now, I'm not sure what's going on and have decided to wait
for the cavalry.
I would have gotten an electrician here in the first place but it is a
holiday weekend.... (Why do these things always happen on a holiday
weekend?)
So, thank you all for the great advice. I will keep the Live Wire
thingie because it's a good thing to have....
