Disavowing Embellished Campfire Stories

When sitting around a campfire and an RVing neighbor you don't know all that well starts telling a terribly embellished story, how can one politely get that person back to telling the truth?

Like the stories here, let's say someone with a few drunk driving convictions wants to tell their version of a story. Perhaps the story happened quite a long time ago and the facts are not now as clear as they once were. More likely, the person hates themselves and they need justification. No matter, big bad government treated him in a way that was simply impossible. He's lying. More to the point, he's lying in a way that you can't trap him. For example, he say "on the record the judge said the cop was right no matter what." If you ask, "really?", he'll just say, "Go check the record."

Leaving the fire and going inside isn't an option. Insulting the story teller isn't an option. Dueling stories isn't an option. What does that leave?
