Um, it's probably just me, but noting the number of hits one gets to a
Google query string isn't quite the same as finding, reading, and
understanding a study that specifically addresses the issue in question.

The first one explains how the plaques build up on the sides of the
arteries
and block the blood flow to the heart.
No question about it, Jerry, that's the mechanism. However, just because
it's a (calcium-laced) cholesterol based material that's causing the
blockage is like blaming misspellings on pencils. Related? Yes. Cause &
effect? No. All of the studies related to that, that I've read seem to
indicate that the body is applying that cholesterol-laden "patch" to
arterial wall damage. Damage that seems to have been caused by insulin
radicals.

I don't know who you Dr. is but is he/she has never seen any studies of
cholesterol clogging arteries, you better get another Dr.
My "Dr." is a life-long human physiology researcher. And he's learned that
while it's cholesterol that's doing the clogging, it's not the cholesterol
that's at fault...it's simply being pressed into service to do a job that
needs doing (fixing artery wall damage).

I have 2 stents in my heart because an artery was 90% blocked from
cholesterol buildup.
Jerry, I'm not doubting what you're telling me at all. And I'm sure you
need those stents to live...since the damage they're being called upon to
mitigate has already been done.

I had 3 friends who didn't watch their cholesterol count.
All 3 died before they were 60.
They all worked in construction and were physically fit.
Interesting observation, but that doesn't make it a cause & effect
correlation. I have many-friends that are in their 90's, that don't watch
their C count either. Does that make that a trend? Of course not. Without
knowning your friends physiology, it's impossible to make any kind of claim
as to the cause of their demise...and if it was avoidable.

No question blocked arteries are problem...the point was that the C
number correlation with actual clogging hasn't been demonstrated ( at
least I haven't seen it, nor can my Dr point me to a study that
does ). Watching your cholesterol count has't been shown to benefit
anyone except the drug companies so far.
While it pains me to have to agree with "dm_callier"...(:-o)!, he's
absolutely spot-on with this one! Way more than half of all the folks that
die from CVD's die with perfectly normal 'C' levels.

The sad fact is that as a population, we've been 'dumbed-down' by marketing
hype. There does not exist today, any peer-reviewed scientific study that
can show ANY PROBLEM AT ALL WITH HUMAN CONSUMPTION OF _NATURAL_ FATS & OILS!
Yet there's an enormous industry built around the nonsensical notion of "Eat
Lo-Fat to live!" or "Eat no-fat and be a better human being!", and so on...
There's not a shred of proof that fats (remember, I'm only and always and
ONLY talking about natural fats--not Trans-Fats or other artifical fats)
cause any kind of harm or damage to the human body. Not one! Not anywhere!
And yet when you go to the supermarket, you'll see no end to folks loading
up on all sorts of "low/no-fat" goodies and then toss on a couple of cases
of artificially sweetened sodas to wash 'em down with. Talk about a recipe
for disaster...

That same kind of 'dumbed-down' marketing is pushing 'cholesterol-lowering'
drugs on folks. Yet there does not exist today, any peer-reviewed
scientific study that can show ANY PROBLEM AT ALL WITH CHOLESTEROL LEVELS IN
THE HUMAN BODY! Did I say that you can't find a couple of million Google
hits about this subject? Nope. But you won't find any scienfically based,
peer-reviewed studies, and to me at least, those are a necessary prereqisite
for even taking a harder look at an issue. But hey! That's just me...

As "dm_callier" had so correctly noted, watching your mythical
"cholesterol-count" is simply an exercise in marketing by the drug
companies. They've correctly noted that arterial plaques are cholesterol
based, and from that concluded (for you) that you need to lower your
cholesterol in order to prevent that and survive. Hey! It works! The
great marketing machines have sucked folks into believing that CFC's damage
the ozone layer; fat's are bad for you; and that global warming is your
fault. Why should they stop?

They've managed to give one class of cholesterols, HDL (High-Density Lipids)
the label "good"; when they're nothing but lipids that have been returned
from the cells to the liver to be broken down and disposed of in your bile.
The cholesterol that your liver manufactures, LDL (Low-Density Lipids) has
been designated "bad"; even as it's being sent out into the bloodstream to
feed and nourish every cell in your body...and then what's left gets
returned as HDL. So, you label one "good" and the other "bad" and now you
can play one off against the other. You can make some mythical relationship
between 'em, and con folks into trying hard to live down to their marketing
expectations. And, I case you've not been paying attention, IT'S WORKING!

Anyway, I'm gonna send this off and attend to the "Dingy Harry", Rush
Limbaugh smear letter auction to see if my bid can win it...(:-o)! ... 16
minutes to go...

L8r all,
Dusty
