Road Trip without RV: Never Again!

Well.... never again if we can help it! We just returned from a two-
week trip from Philly area to Kansas City to Aspen, Colorado. We (DH,
darling dog Alfie, and I) took the Land Cruiser and went to see our
kids in KC suburbs, stayed with them a few days then on to stay for a
few days in our other kids' apartment in the heart of Aspen. We
decided to go without the RV for a few reasons: we would be staying in
our childrens' home, we had a gorgeous place to stay in Aspen, and we
were waiting for our new tow vehicle to be delivered, so didn't want
to put all that mileage on the truck we were trading.

Pros of not taking the RV: Hmmmm.... can't think of any, other than
we would have not had a place to leave it in Aspen. We could have
parked in the kids' driveway in Kansas City. In fact, we're planning
to head South over the Christmas vacation break, but will go via KC
and park in their driveway.

Cons: I HATE staying in strange beds, in strange motels. We stop
only for the night, to get some rest and move on -- so there is no
need to find a luxury hotel, but after one stop in a dive, I insisted
that we upgrade a tad, and spend the extra money. DH says that he can
sleep anywhere, on any sheets, with any blankets, etc. (he has been
hunting away from home since the age of 12, and I don't even like to
THINK about some of the accomodations). I HATE feeling like I have to
clean a motel bathroom before I use it. I HATE using the tiny bars of
crappy soap (I bring my own to use for showering), the cardboard
toilet paper, and the tiny, rough towels.

DH hates the stopping to find a place to stay... going in, finding out
they won't accept the dog or want to charge $25 for him (he is
cleaner, neater and more respectful of property than a lot of two-
legged folks I know), or they don't have a first-floor room...

I HATE not being able to wake up and have a decent cup of coffee.
Don't even talk to me about those mini pots with dried, stale coffee
in a package and the powdered creamer.

DH was shocked to see me turn down the bed covers one night and smell
the sheets. I don't have to do that in my RV.

DH complained about freezing one night, when we had this horrible
double bed since it was the only room left, and I insisted that we had
to throw the blankets and bedspread on the floow -- heaven forbid we
should allow them to touch our bodies. Well, he said he wouldn't
care... but I sure did.

We've made a pact -- no more road trips without the RV. It's not a
vacation if we can't take our own home with us! Luckily, the day we
got home, the Ford dealer called to say, "Your truck is in!" Hooray!
It's a one-ton Super Duty with all the bells and whistles. It goes
out this week to get the bed liner and the hitch fittings.
