Well, those are two different things, but I can tell you what they both were like a long time ago. Which one do you want to hear about?

Now I don't consider this to be normal, because there were hundreds of people crossing pot across the Rio Grande, and they did it in a variety of ways, but this is how we did it.

The structure of the organization was most interesting and very hard for the DEA to infiltrate, because everyone with the exception of me and one other guy, were all members of the same family. I did not, at the time, realize how dangerous this was for me and the other dude. If they had gotten busted, they would have immediately thought it was me or him.

Anyway, the grandfather and uncles grew the pot down in Mexico and they moved it up to the border in Matamoros. They would call their relatives in the US and let them know it was coming and when. They would bring in about a ton or so every month during harvest time and then a little at a time throughout the year.

My friend that hired me to do this was a truly scary individual. He had a lot of money, lots of cars, houses, relatives enough to form a small army and lots and lots of guns. I originally bought pot from him and then one day he asked me if I wanted to "earn" some free marijuana. I asked him how and he told me. I was a bit leary, but he said I could make a grand in one night and he had been doing it for years. So, I said yes.

He picked me up a couple of nights later and we went over to Mexico and down to the red light district (Sombido). We drank a few beers and waited for his uncle to show up. When he came, we went out and drove down the highway toward the coast and turned north down a dirt road to the river. We immediately unloaded all of the pot and everyone left except for the swimmers and my friend (I only knew this guy as Wino).

Four of us stripped off our clothes and gave them to Wino and we dragged some inner tubes out of the brush and tied the pot onto the inner tubes. Each tube could hold about 200 pounds without wanting to tip over too badly. Then we jumped into the river and swam across dragging the tubes with us. We untied the pot and piled it up on the bank, one guy stayed there and the rest of us swam back across with the tubes. We repeated this until all the pot was across.

By this time, about 12 guys had met up with the guy that was waiting with the pot. We waited until one guy had swam the inner tubes back across and stuffed them back in their hiding place. When he got back, we each picked up a bale and carried it (remember, I am still naked) through a corn field about a 1/2 mile to a small hay barn. We stacked the pot in the hay barn and covered it with bales of hay. We then walked to a house about another 1/4 mile away from the barn. Then we waited until Wino had driven back across the bridge and came to the house with our clothes. I went with Wino and he drove me back to my house.

For that I earned 800 dollars and about 5 pounds of pot (2 kilos). Swam across the Rio twice each way and walked 3/4 of a mile carrying a bale of pot.

Not too sensational, but very, very nerve wracking.

That is how we "normally" did it.

My kids range in age from 43-51. All married for a long time. Even their children have all left the nest except one.

Last night I got a full report on the hunting weekend from our oldest son (51). Later we got a call from our youngest daughter (43) who just got off a flight from CA. 5 e-mails from the grandkids today. The ones in college and those already graduated.
