Re: Worst Trip Ever

I really think our Interstate roads are deteriorating faster than they are being repaired or upgraded. I am setting here in Las Vegas after making a three day dash over 1800 miles of I-40 primarily. Each stop was followed with replacing every thing in there normal place.
I think the or one of the actions that could be taken is to upgrade the suspension system to an air ride type of arrangement.
Mind you I was not always going eight over just some of the time, when the slabs were smoother. When you get into New Mexico and Arizona where the speed limit is 75 and the road surface is smooth, you can make good time.
Diesel topped $3. in some places, like Las Vegas where I fueled last.
Those 6% grade mountains were a snap for the Cumins and 48RE trans. Just put her in cruise at 5mph below where you want to descend at and it will drop down a gear when needed to keep the speed down, I don't think I need an exhaust brake like I thought.

If you don't have shocks on the unit put a kit on.
An air ride hitch, or whatever the proper name is, by several companies will help a lot, not just in the ride of tow vehicle.
We traveled the same routes several times. The hitch does make a difference. If your kitchen is aft of the axle you may still get some dishes tossed around.
Appropriate speed for conditions is about the only thing that will work for certain.
Take your time and have a lot of fun.

I have a mid kitchen, but you are right about things at the rear taking it the worst. But seeing screws getting loose is also part of it. I watched the tires and they appeared to be well balanced and rode smooth provided the road surface was also smooth. I am talking about the deterioration of the roads compared with what they were just a few years back. I have traveled on some of Texas roads that were much better maintained than the Interstate system. This trip just proves how much poorer I-40 is from I-20 and 10. Above all they are becoming worser as the time goes by. They will have to pick up on their maintenance or the conditions will over run them. I think the answer is to get some of the commercial loads off the highways and piggie back on the rail system much more. Speed is not all together it, our rigs are made to go fast and the roads when maintained will allow it. Some of the 18 wheelers have an air-ride system that would work on an RV, that is what I am really talking about. Yes Shock absorbers would be an improvement.
