I bought one because I thought it was cool. I am directionally
challenged and it's very hard to read a map while trying to figure out
if I should have made that left or that "other" left. I find it
exceptionally helpful when I'm alone in the car. We could have
definitely used one when we were traveling in cities we hadn't been to
this past summer.

I bought my first one because I thought they were kwel too.
I am not saying GPS technology isn't great, because it is. But, there
are many misconceptions about them. Some of the cheaper model won't
pick up enough satelites if it is cloudy or you are under a heavy
canopy and such. Altho, even the cheap ones can get you within 3 feet
most of the time, they are not perfect unless you spend a few thousand
dollars, then you can be pretty acurate.
I still stand by my statement that very few tow trucks have GPS. I
don't know about the dispatchers tho. Giving a dispatcher your
coordinates may lead the driver to your location. Chevrolets OnStar is
a persons best bet if they are prone to getting lost and have no idea
what road they are on.
Emergency squads and firetrucks don't have GPS either. I would rather
see EMS have GPS than a tow truck.
I will agree that most mapping programs are better than paper maps,
but either way, neither are perfect.
It seems I must be an exception. I can travel from my home in Ohio to
any MAJOR city by looking at a paper map once before I get in the car.
You usually only have to remember 3-4 interstate highways. It must be
magic!
In closing, there is a great need for GPS technology. Over the road
truckers use it to save time, fuel and etc.
Many trucking companies use GPS/satallite/cell phone technology to track
their trucks and stolen vehicles can often be tracked using the same
technology.

If you are in a plane or a boat, it can save your life for sure. I
found it really hard to stop to ask for directions while in a plane or
boat. :-)
