People post lots of things here that they would never say to someone's face. We all do it to one extent or another. What really does count is how one behaves with other people in person.

What you see on Usenet is not always what you get in real life. Usenet might try to mimic life, but it's a poor substitute for face to face social interaction.

I think part of it is the need to come on stronger here than in real life. A conversation that might take 10 minutes in your living room (with plenty of time to explain differences in understanding of the topic) will frequently take a few days here.

Don't forget that in some one's living room there are libations and chips and dip at minimum.

For that reason, you might have to state your initial position a lot stronger here, just to cut thru the noise, get someone else's attention, and get a response. After that, you will need to defend or modify your position (again over the course of days), and that often means overstating the position again. Here there is no chance to change someone else's mind, so you (in essence) shout your points, just hoping to be "heard."

Janet, who is probably meaner here than she is in real life, too.

Although we've never met, I feel confident that you can delete the "probably".

Thanks, Bruce. I appreciate that.
