So why do some people feel a need to act that way, even here? Is it just
because they can? Are they trying to project some kind of "tough" image?
Do they think people will respect them -- or perhaps be afraid of them?
(And why would they care?) Are they trying to cover up for some real or
imagined inadequacy? (Rhetorical questions, all....)

OOh, OOOh, Mr. Kotter, Mr. Kott-ter! I have some theories:

Some of the outbursts we see are the result of people hitting the
limit of their verbal skills. They're expressing the frustration they feel
at not being able to adequately express their thoughts.

For some people the primary attraction of usenet is that they can
express their anger and frustration in a "socially acceptable" manner. Yeah
I know, it's not socially acceptable here either, but it's far more socially
acceptable for them if they express it here instead of with the people they
deal with face to face. If they did that they'd be socially ostracized. We
have a couple of long time posters here who clearly fit this mold. I'll bet
they're smooth as silk with the church ladies and other "nice" people that
they regularly interact with, even though some of those folks probably
aren't all that bright or reasonable to deal with. Usenet is their outlet.

I don't think anyone thinks it makes them look tough, or at least I
would hope not, because it makes them look weak. But, when things turn
really ugly I suspect it's an attempt to overpower their verbal "opponent"
and gain a sense of victory that they aren't going to get any other way.

Just some theories.
