Wyoming only add's less then 20,000 acres. They are going good
According to this morning's report there are currently 664,000+
acres of active fires in ID and 440,000+ acres of active fires in
MT. I didn't check
WY, but I believe they have their share of fires also.
Ron
I came up with 35,000 acres. The Columbine 1 fire in YNP is up to
18,500 acres by itself according to the National Interagency Fire
Center. http://www.nifc.gov/fire_info/nfn.htm
Yesterday afternoon WY had a different kind of problem. A
thunderstorm caused a landslide 7.5 miles east of the Yellowstone NP
east entrance (road to Cody). Once again the road was closed! The
report I saw said both lanes were covered with about 3' of material
for a length of 50' or so. The report didn't give an esteem of when
the road would open again.
We were in YNP yesterday and shortly after noon saw something you
seldom see. The fishing Bridge RV park had a 'vacancy' sign out!
Probably had a lot of cancellations due to the nearby fires and road
closures. Bob probably had an easy afternoon!
Ron
The road is open again, at least for now. Yup, we have vacancies in the
30
and 35 foot ranges, but the 40's still fill up pretty fast. We were down
to about 7 spaces when the road closed, then we went up to 19 in a few
minutes.
The other CG's have a "lot" of open spaces, but tent campers don't like
this cold, and wet.
It's drier today, and wind is supposed to start again this afternoon. If
that happens the fire will be off and running again.
How long will you be "down the hill"?
These showers are doing a nice job of clearing the air up here. Of
course,
once the rain stops and the wind blows the fire starts up again. The WH
Complex is getting close to 30,000 acres and is only about 15 miles SE of
us. Some of that area burned last summer, but left enough fuel for a good
burn this year!
Ron
Ron, we moved from the Tetons to West Yellowstone on Saturday. It
rained all night Thursday night then much of Friday when we were in
the Tetons, The helicopter fighting the fire near Thermopolis that
was using the Jackson airport as a fuel stop was not in evidence
Friday. I don't know how the fire could have survived that rain.
On Saturday when we drove in the South Gate of Yellowstone we couldn't
see any smoke from the fire that was on the Continental Divide east of
the South Entrance. It may still be burning but it was not evident.
According to YNPs web site they got an inch of rain of the fire near the
east entrance road and it had quieted down, but was not our by any means.
Give it a few sunny days, warm/hot temperatures and some wind and it will
flare up again. The WH Complex near us has slowed down due to the rain and
cooler temps. The official reports say it will be a 'long-term event' which
generally means the fire will burn until snowfall covers the area and
smothers the fire.
The temperatures have been GREAT. I think it got down to 39-degrees
last night. Talk about good sleeping weather, it doesn't get any
better.
We had a couple of nights with cloud cover and the low was only about 60,
but last night the clouds cleared and the temp dropped to 51. Still great
sleeping weather!
Our son and one of our grandsons is with us and the animal watching
has been great. We were on top of the pass on the loop road between
Canyon Junction and Tower watching a black bear when a hail storm hit
us. Little B.B. size hail but it was cold. It scattered the bear
watchers. It didn't phase the bear. When it quit storming everyone
returned to watching the bear.
We were in that area Friday. We had either BB size hail or sleet (we never
figured out which) between Fishing Bridge and Canyon. A little south of the
Mt Washburn Trail parking lot people were waiting for a black bear sow and
her cub to re-emerge from behind some brush several hundred yards up the
hillside. We have seen too much wildlife up close and don't get excited
about seeing some several hundred yards away so we didn't hang around.
Last week a bull moose was hanging around the creek along the road a few
miles south of Tower Falls, but.it isn't a good viewing area due to the very
limited parking, steep slope down to the creek and lots of trees.
