Believe it or not the pervasive smell of chocolate is pretty much gone.
Most of the manufacturing has been moved elsewhere (Mexico?). The only
time you really smell it is when the monorail goes by the old factory
which is still in production.
What a shame. I loved it when I lived nearby in the 80s and the wind would blow the
right direction. I wonder if some/all of that has to do with emission controls? I
know that Mars has a chocolate plant in Cleveland and not a whiff of a chocolate odor
emits. Not so for the cookie line which is yummy when the wind is right.
No more factory tour by the way.
They had just stopped those when I arrived at Three Mile Island in about 81. I still
got a tour cuz a former employee from Mars that I ran into in the supermarket had
gone to work for Hershey's. It was one of those off-the-books, late at night tours,
of course.
