Carl, that article all well and good conjecture but it's just that,
conjecture. If we hadn't gone into Iraq, a few things are clear: Some
4000 of our service men and women would still be alive and we wouldn't
be in debt up to our ears for our great-great grandkids to be paying
Have you thought about how many Iraqis would by now have perished in his
killing camps, how many women would have been raped in his rape rooms, how
many children would have been killed, eviscerated, stuffed, roasted and
served to their parents for their last meal?
As to the debt, you are not up to date. Despite the costs of the war, our
national debt is declining at a rapid rate because the economy is doing
better than ever before in the history of the USA -- thanks to Bush's wise
approach to reducing taxes.
... If you remember, Iraq and Saddam were our friends at one time. He
was just as bad then as he was when we invaded. We were supplying him
weapons. There are a lot of tyrants of the worlds that we seem to be
able and deal with without invading. As far as possible nukes, Libya
was after them too and we got them to drop the program.
They dropped the program in late 2003, when they saw that America under the
leadership of G.W.Bush wasn't the loudmouthed threat-making paper tiger of
the Clinton/Allbright regime.
Face it, Bush blew it.
Face it, like in any military endeavor, plans and reality didn't match. For
fear of being accused of colonialism in the pursuit of oil we decided on a
low key/small footprint approach. Further, Americans (by virtue of their
atrocious public education) were totally ignorant of the societal dynamics
in Iraq and totally misjudged the Sunni/Shia relationship. Heck, the new
Democrat Chair of the House Intelligence Committee couldn't even name the
alignment of Sunni and Shia countries in the are.
And now, despite all the false starts and the home front sabotage that the
Liberal media has used to manipulate public support, it looks that we might
get on top of the problems after all. So, instead of supporting Petraeus we
have the cowards in the Democrat party sabotaging the effort and
blackmailing Republican senators up for reelection to save their jobs by
turning the voters against them.
For shame! This used to be a country that stood for principles and whose
words could be trusted. That's when we earned and enjoyed world leadership.
But those golden days ended when Eisenhower's presidency ended. Since the
days of Kennedy we have become experts at cut-and-run, and the only wars we
win are those we impose on major world powers such as Grenada and Panama.
And don't forget that the only reason we won the cold war was that we could
borrow more money than the Soviets.
