It sounds to me like your system restore function has been turned off.

Possibly. I don't recall doing it, but my recaller isn't all it used to
be. Turning off the restore feature doesn't seem like something that
would seem to be a good idea to me. As in: Wife: "why on earth would you
do something like <insert practically anything>?" Me: "It seemed like a
good idea at the time."

I've got an expert coming this afternoon. In the meantime, I've
purchased an external hard drive and have copied my data to the new
drive. Hopefully, I won't lose too much if I end up having to reformat
the whole drive.

Have you still got your Restore disks that came with/you made when you
bought the computer? If so, stick disk #1 in and reboot. See if you can
do a repair to Windows.
