Can you boot up in "safe mode" and access the system restore from there?
How do I do that. I can't find instructions on the computer and the
"help" function is another place that is acting strange.

While it's booting, press F8 until you get a boot menu.
Thanks, Frank. That got me booted into safe mode. Unfortunately, I
still get a blank pane when the system restore window opens. I guess
I'll next have to try Robert's fix and see what happens. This is
getting to be a real PITA.
Don

There's NO NEED to try my method. it is a 'rude, crude, brute force' method
to get to a boot menu, to go to 'safe mode'.

You've _already_been there, no point in trying again.

What you have is 'something beyond _your_ ability to deal with'. Take it to
a repair shop.

That is what _I_ would have to do, if I were at that point with my Windows box.
(on Unix boxes, OTOH, I _am_ the expert the other folks bring their boxes
to, to be fixed. :)

Chances are good that 'something' _seriously_ bad has invaded the machine,
and disabled things like the 'restore' function *expressly* to prevent you
from getting rid of the invader.

It's possible the system is just 'terminally confused', and not invaded, but
it takes special stuff to get to the bottom of that king of issue.

Either way, "specialist" services -- and specialist tools -- are indicated.

You've done everything you can, time to call the experts
.
