You need accuracy in your fuel gauge, I don't. No problem there. I stopped shopping for the cheapest when I let my motorhome go under an eighth of a tank, uncovered the pump and had to screw with replacing that over the next few months. No, I get gas whenever there is a possibility I might uncover that pump.
I understand that a cheap meter might create problems. Let's bring the discussion back to the OBD port. Let's assume that the meter accurately reads the data and displays it properly. Now the issue is the data from the OBD port. Are you suggesting that the data from a typical OBD port would be so bad as to preclude it from being useful?
While I didn't do a study, the data I see on my PC when driving around appears to be good.
Again, I am not interested in knowing the transmission fluid temperature to the tenth of a degree. I don't want to pay for that and wouldn't use it.

I want a transmission temperature gauge that gives me some number when conditions are normal. Over time, I will get a feel for how it is supposed to behave. When I took my featherweight Saturn and pull it around I know what it should read. When I put my heavier CJ-5 behind me, I expect the transmission will have to work harder. I expect the temperature to be higher. Eventually, I will define normal. Now when I observe operation outside that range, I will either have to explain it through terrain and weight or I know I have some mechanical problem.
The problem is, if the gauge isn't accurate then it may or may not also be stable and.
repeatable. You don't know whether a long term upward trend in the transmission
operating temperature is a problem developing such as a clogged cooler or incipient
clutch slippage or simply instrument drift.
A calibrated instrument is always repeatable and is usually stable over time. Though
the meter's absolute value may not mean anything to you, that it displays that same
value every time for like temperatures does. At the least, it forced the designer to
design the system for accuracy and repeatability.
