Is it possible it may be defective? Or have you moved very far
from it's last fix? I have that unit now, and it works fine for
me, and gets a fix in less than 5 minutes. Usually less than 1,
and is almost instant when it's hot. (Been off less than 5
minutes.)
I was also wondering if it's defective. I'll try it with the old
Delorme GPS unit I have and see if it acquires more quickly.
The Ranger brought his by here a few days ago, and when we took it
outside, it only took a couple of minutes to get 3D. And I'm not
going to speculate why, but it also fed Topo 6 simultaneously, and
we hadn't intentionally installed any splitter software.

All of my experience has been with a GPS that needs a serial to USB
converter cable, and it makes a COM port (COM 4) - which I then
split into virtual ports with GpsGate. When his was running, there
were no COM ports in device manager, and both SA 2008 and Topo 6
showed "USB" in the port settings.

Did he let the Delorme Serial emulator install when he installed
2008? Topo 6 alos installs it. It works like GPSgate but only has 3
ports.

I don't know. I installed it on my machine, and I don't remember it
asking me any questions about a serial emulator. What would I look
for in file directories or the registry?

Look for "C:\Program Files\Common Files\DeLorme\DeLSerial" "C:\Program
Files\Common Files\DeLorme\DeLSerial\VspStartup.exe"

Also, if it's installed, it should be in the Startup folder.

And does it work with a serial to
USB converter, and does it make one or more com ports in device
manager? Because, as I said, his had no com ports in device manager,
and both SA and Topo automatically selected USB.

No and no. If it's running, it will be a little satellite dish in the
tray near the clock. Right click for options. If you choose Monitor
it brings up the old MNG and older SA GPs panel.

Choose ports, and you can assign any ports that you might think may be
open. It should find open ports, but if they aren't being used, it
may assign ports that will be used by something else.

Oh, it may have asked you if you wanted to share the GPS. I think. I
can't remember. Throw the Topo 6 disk in and do a repair and see if it
asks.

But it won't help you with your meridian. As before, it only works
with a USB receiver.

Wait. I'm wrong. Topo6, SA2007, and SA2008, using the Earthmate GPS
LT-20 USB receiver, don't need the Delorme Serial Emulator to share the
GPS.

I just went in on the desktop, the Emulator isn't installed on it.
Topo6, SA2007, and SA2008 all shared the GPS just fine. However, MNG
won't work with it. It needs a serial GPS.

So forget what I said. The emulator is needed for MNG. My older model
of the Earthmate is broke, (that's how I ended up with the newer one),
so I can't tell if it works the same way or not. I do remember getting
some errors about not finding a GPS, but it also was with some older
versions of Topo and SA. If I can find it and get it working, I'll
check and see. I'll also have to install some of the older SAs till I
find out where the change is to supporting a USB GPS.

So, I decided to do a little experimenting. I found the older Earthmate
Puck. fired it up on the Desktop and it worked. So then I installed
Topo4 and 5 in addition to 6 that was already there.

Then I installed SA9, SA2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006. 2007 and 2008 are
already there.

Topo 5, 6, SA2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 were all working on the one
USB Earthmate GPS. A little wonky though. I had maxed out my memory and
was deep into disk swapping. But all 7 programs were working off one GPS
receiver with no diddling of ports or Emulators.

MNG7, SA9, (I don't have SA8), and SA2003 need a serial gps.
