I'm seeing a 99.9% uptime. Occasionally I lose signal when a very
heavy rainstorm or snowstorm moves to the south of me. Locate your
dish so that you can get to it to clean the ice off it. It does
affect the signal in spite of what the installer may tell you.
The actual data moves pretty swiftly, it's the delay when clicking on
things that give the perception of slowness. If you have been used to
a DSL or cable connection where data is instantaneous, the sat seem
slow since there is a slight delay after clicking, but then the data
moves well.
I have the 1mb service and my downloads average 800 or better. I just
downloaded an update to Office that was 19mbytes and it downloaded in
about 2 minutes.
Thanks,Frank. I was afraid this thread was going to lose any value; pretty much what
happens any time I see Snoman's name show up in the thread.
I spent a pretty good bit of time on satellite internet last year when I was driving
the truck. All Texas rest areas have free wifi and it's connected via Hughsnet. It
was entirely tolerable. Not like my DSL back home but tolerable and usable.
SkyBlue is the alligator mouth with a hummingbird ass. Also they have
a monthly FAP policy. Hit you monthly quota and you will stay on less
than dial up speed for the rest of the month. You could conceivably
get FAPped in the first week of the billing month and be screwed for
the whole rest of the month.
Hughes' FAP policy only puts you in for 24 hours. And you still get
the freebie from 3am to 6am, EST.
yeah, those two things are swinging me toward Hughs. I anticipate being close to FAP
all the time and will certainly throb the bird in that 3 hour window.
I gotta go down to town tomorrow and have one last chat with the telephone company's
engineering manager (gotta love small phone companies where one can walk in and
actually talk to people!) and make my final pitch for DSL up here. I think I'll
offer to toss a kilobuck toward the mini-SLAM. After all, I'm going to spend pretty
close to that on satellite hardware and install. Heck, maybe I'll volunteer to put
it in for him :-) The box is on the other side of the road from my place.
If that doesn't work then I guess I bite the bullet. *sigh*

That's my major gripe with Embarq, (Sprint), the switch is in my front
yard, and it's 3.5 miles to the building. They won't install a SLAM.
